Nice, nice, very nice. I moved to Paraguay for 3 years in 1975 and have visited every 18-30 months ever since. I thought I knew the country pretty well. The author provides gems of insight on places and things to do that I found astounding and wondered how I hadn't uncovered some of these same things! Her love of the country comes through in her writing. Buy this book. You will be happy you did!

Paraguay is often only a footnote in most guide books. This guide is the most comprehensive that I have seen, and I have been visiting Paraguay for over 30 years. It is a must if you want to discover the beauties of a country that has not fully embraced the tourist trade, but has much to offer. In it we discovered wonderful places to visit that were unknown to people living within an hour of the attraction.

Lots of valuable information here, but it feels somewhat incomplete. But then, to me, most travel books do, anyway. That's just me. If you are going to Paraguay, this is the book to take.

A good solid introduction to this relatively unknown (for Americans) country with a tragic history of appalling dictatorial governance that, while now over, continues to burden its very friendly citizens.

We couldn't find any travel books on Paraguay, and books on Central America had only a few pages. Thanks to Margaret Hebblethwaite, we are progressing well on our plans.

In February 2011 I wrote this email to Margaret, from Asuncion, Paraguay.Margaret, thank you very much for your Paraguay Guidebook. I have been visiting Paraguay for 3 yrs now, staying for 2-3 months at a time. I speak enough spanish to rent an apartment and car and get around freely. I have lamented the lack of information available for Parguay, even among the locals.I was perusing the bookshops in Plaza Uruguaya the other day and found your book. I purchased it immediately. I just want to comment on 3 parts.1. I have driven through Villa Florida before and was unable to find the famous beaches I saw in the jaha booklet and others. I went there yesterday with your book and found everything, and I'm returning to Playa Paraiso as soon as I find a decent camping shop.2. Cerro Yaguaron. A paraguayan friend of mine had heard of it but not the religious significance. I had heard a whisper but could not find out more. Your book cleared up everything.3.Caacupe. I have been to Caacupe with my friends and visited the sacred well and filled up our water bottles and thermos and I was interested to see if you mentioned that. You did, plus a full explanation in english of the relevance of the Virgin and the public holiday. All I knew was that everything shut for the day and to stay away from ruta 2 and Caacupe.You book has helped me immensely in enjoying this great country. It will be going home to Australia with me so I can study it properly and plan before my next visit here in November.Thank youSince that time I returned to Paraguay for 7 months, and applied for residency. I travelled all around the country using Margarets book as a guide. It never failed me once.To any unbiased reader, any negative comments about this book are an attempt to raise another book further up the ratings. I have not read the other book and will not comment, but noone should try and raise one one person up by trying to lower another. This is unchristianlike, and totally at odds with the organisation supporting the other publication.

We planned our trip to Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina with the help of our German Paraguay Guide. Then, since I always liked to have at least two guides of my travelling destinations, I browsed the internet looking for another one - and found only one: the Bradt Paraguay travel guide. Unfortunately, after ordering it via amazon.com, I didn't have the time to read it prior to our departure, and I didn't really see a need for that, since our trip was already planned and scheduled and booked.What a mistake! I then started to read during the flight, and I literally didn't stop till our trip was over. More or less having the same size and format of our German guide, this book at least doubles the amount of information one can suck out of it. One can really feel the love the author put in when writing it. It absolutely was fun to read, and I cursed myself for not having it read in advance. It's not only all the info about almost every place in this country that seems - through her eyes - to be worth a stop-over (info, which other guides might offer also about selected destinations), but how she gives advice about how to put several destinations in a reasonable row, making this book an extremely helpful tour planner as well....So, over all, we would like to thank Margaret Hebblethwaite for her book, which we will recommend to everybody in our circle who is going to visit Paraguay, and our friends here.

About the Author

John Pinel, the author of Biopsychology , obtained his Ph.D. from McGill University in Montreal and worked briefly at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, before taking a faculty position at the University of British Columbia, where he is currently Professor Emeritus. Professor Pinel is an award-winning teacher and the author of over 200 scientific papers. However, he feels that Biopsychology is his major career-related accomplishment. “It ties together everything I love about my job; students, teaching, writing, and research.”

When you hear him being incredibly smart and funny on This American Life, you invariably think, "Oh, it's David Sedaris." But if you listen closely, you can tell the difference. Rakoff, while no less witty or nasal, is a little more disappointed. In his first collection--a series of pieces for public radio and for various magazines--he positively revels in his world-weariness. Whether he's investigating the Loch Ness monster, attending a comedy festival in Aspen, Colorado, visiting a New Age retreat hosted by Steven Seagal, or just, you know, playing Freud in a department-store window at Christmastime, Rakoff tends to get comically depleted. Watching the comic Dan Castellaneta, for example, he writes, "It's a bad sign when I start counting the unused props on stage. Only two wigs, one stool, an easel, and a dropcloth to go. I begin to pray to an unfeeling God to please make Castellaneta multitask." In a piece where he attempts to climb a mountain (well... a very short hill), Rakoff immediately nips any Sierra Club fantasies in the bud: "I do not go outdoors. Not more than I have to. As far as I'm concerned, the whole point of living in New York City is indoors. You want greenery? Order the spinach." But in the end, what makes him such a terrific writer is that he's not only onto everyone else, he's onto himself. Assigned to visit a New Age retreat for a Buddhism workshop led by Steven Seagal, to look for elves in Iceland, to attend the Aspen Comedy Festival and to train at a wilderness survival camp, Rakoff endures urban dweller misadventures with a spin that occasionally remind one of Fran Lebowitz, such as during his hike up a New Hampshire mountain: "If only the mist would part to reveal a beautiful, beautiful parking lot, I will get through this." Outstanding is "Lush Life," a look at the delusions and despair of low-paid NYC editorial assistants, "complicit believers in the mythic glamour of a literary New York" yet forced to subsist on "salmonella-friendly" free snacks in "unhappening bars" where they can avoid former classmates with six-figure incomes. Rakoff can be as funny as Dave Barry or George Carlin, but he adds a touch of pathos, peeling away poignant layers unexplored by other humor writers. The author's woodcut illustrations are barely adequate, since the book cries out for Ralph Steadman art. The book cries out, period. And despite the frequent use of first person, indeed the starring role the author often grants himself, most readers won't think of this as autobiography, much less memoir. Journalist, actor, and radio commentator Rakoff has gathered in his first book what can best be described as essays on contemporary culture. The only real theme is his attitude self-deprecating when not self-doubting but no more enchanted with the rest of humanity and the contrivance of his position as irreconcilable outsider. By his own estimate, Rakoff is too thin, gay, Jewish, Canadian, and devoutly urban, while these essays find him climbing a New Hampshire mountain on Christmas day, reporting on the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, playing a modeling agent on a daytime soap, tagging along with Austrians invited to teach in the New York City public school system, and so forth. These situations, however, are mere excuses to expose small parts of the world in which we live. Rakoff's real talent, and there is plenty of it on display here, resides in his powers of social and personal analysis in the guise of description. Highly recommended for general collections.
