William Lutz, a professor of English at Rutgers University and former editor of the Quarterly Review of Doublespeak, has had enough of doublespeak--the inflated, involved and often deliberately ambiguous use of language or when "strategic misinterpretations" are used instead of lies. He argues that the practice has been growing in our culture, and he's right. In this book he reviews doubletalk by Democrats, Republicans, journalists, economists and Supreme Court justices, and shows how the repeated use of a phrase allows it to stay unchallenged in the lexicon. Say what you mean, argues Lutz, and we'll all be better off.

YA. This is the second book by the doublespeak detective who entertains, angers, and motivates with his continuing exposure of the nonsense language that pervades the public atmosphere. With brevity, clarity, and wit, Lutz explains that doublespeak is language that makes the bad seem good, the negative appear positive, the unpleasant appear attractive or at least tolerable. A tax increase, for example, is not a tax increase, but rather "revenue enhancement," "wage-based premium," "user fee," or "passenger facility charge." Workers are never laid off; they're "redundant," "transitioned," or offered "voluntary severance," or, as in the computer industry, they're "uninstalled." The author talks about fuzzy thinking, labels and mental maps, signs and symbols as well as cognitive dissonance in ways that are easily understood and humorously illustrated. His purpose is to help readers identify ways in which we are ripped off, hoodwinked, and otherwise manipulated by others due to the pervasive influence and acceptance of doublespeak. I didn't choose the text -- it was selected by another faculty member who generally teaches the class. I would choose it myself, however, based on the good "fit" with my students. It gives great "real life" examples that help them see how these concepts work in today's businesses. They enjoy the examples, since they know the businesses. It's written at a good level for them, even though the concepts still seem challenging!

About the Author
Robert A. Pitts is professor of Strategic and International Management at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania since 1986, Robert Pitts has authored a wide range of successful strategy texts, articles, and case studies during his 27 years of teaching. His teaching and research focus also includes the field of corporate finance. Prior to Gettysburg, he taught for 13 years in the management department at Penn State University. Pitts has been a visiting professor at the Sasin Graduate Institute in Bangkok, Thailand and IMEDE Management Institute in Lausanne, Switzerland, among others. Before entering academia, he worked in industry as an Investment Analyst for Prudential, a Plant Manager in Thailand, and as a US Peace Corps volunteer. Pitts holds degrees from Harvard (DBA), Columbia (MBA), and Yale (BA).

David Lei received his PhD at Columbia University in Marketing/Management of Organizations and is now an Associate Professor of Business Policy at Southern Methodist University. His area of expertise is in Strategic Alliances, Corporate Strategy, Manufacturing Technology, and Global Communication. Lei's current research interests are investment technology and strategic alliances, he also consults with various companies in financial services and technology-intensive firms. Professor Lei has written numerous journal articles and served as an ad-hoc reviewer for several academic journals.

This manual does not live up to the hype that the publisher put out. The illustrations are rudimentary and the definitions are shallow. Most of the illustrations have to do with obvious or outdated construction items. This may be a useful manual for people who are starting out in the industry (or history buffs), but definitely not for the seasoned professionals. One more book to gather dust on the shelve...

This book has great descriptions and pictures of the terms. It is taylored mostly toward the building industry and less toward transportation and heavy civil, but it still has some terms concerning those in it.

Everything you may want to know definition of with regard to Construction is here and most likely illustrated so that you know what it actually looks like. If you are in college learning about this stuff this will definitely come in handy for when your in school and when you end up working in the field.
