Kosko , an engineering professor at the University of Southern California, makes a provocative new scientific paradigm intelligible to the general reader. Fuzzy logic posits a world in which absolutes, such as those implied in the words "true" and "false , " are less important and interesting than the matters of degree between them. "Fuzziness is grayness," and "the truth lies in the middle," according to Kosko, one of the pioneers of fuzzy logic theory, which he persuasively presents as a world view rooted more in Buddhist and Taoist assumptions than in the dichotomous Aristotelian tradition. He proposes FATs (Fuzzy Approximation Theorems) for the existence (and non-existence, as fuzziness demands) of God and as models of the abortion debate. In consumer terms, fuzzy logic is behind such "smart" machines as air conditioners and microwave ovens that gauge their operation to the conditions and demands of a given moment's task. Writing with style and risk, Kosko challenges assumptions, not about the existence of scientific authority, but about its nature.

Aristotle is out and Buddha is in; the law of the excluded middle (either A or not-A) is repealed, and A and not-A together replaces it. No more black and white, right and wrong, true or false. In their place come shades of gray, more or less, maybe so, maybe not. Why? Because the new world of fuzzy logic more closely mirrors reality, has a rigor all its own, and is paying off in the marketplace. Kosko (Electrical Engineering/USC) has been called the ``St. Paul'' of fuzziness, and for good reason: Not only has he contributed major theories and proofs in the development of fuzzy logic, but he's also been a major proselytizer and gadfly, organizing conferences and frequently going on the road (which usually leads to Japan). He's also young...which may account for the passion and posturing that color the text. Indeed, until Kosko gets down to chapter and verse on what FL is and how it works, reader will be put off by the constant put-down of Western logic and philosophy and opposing schools of computer science. But when Kosko is good, he's very, very good. One comes away from his text with a real understanding of the concepts of fuzzy sets, rules, and systems, and of how they're applied to make ``smart'' machines, devices, trains, and planes. He's also good in extending these ideas to neural nets in hypothesizing how brains change, learn, get smart. But toward the end, he plunges big time into metaphysical questions about life, death, cosmology, God (seen as the math- maker). Curious about the future, Kosko says that he'll opt for freezing at death. Still, for all the self-indulgence, probably the best primer around for learning what FL is all about, certainly cuts above Daniel McNeill and Paul Freiberger's Fuzzy Logic (p. 45). -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. About the Author

Dr. William G. Brozo was a co-investigator on a Carnegie Grant team that compiled an important report on best practice in adolescent literacy (Principled Practices for Adolescent Literacy: A Framework for Instruction and Policy, Erlbaum).  He is a member of the Adolescent Literacy Committee, and member of the PISA/PIRLS Task Force responsible for analyzing international reading assessments.  His other Pearson Education books include Content Literacy for Today’s Adolescents: Honoring Diversity and Building Competence, 50 Content Area Strategies for Adolescent Literacy, and Supporting Content Area Literacy with Technology: Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners.  He has taught reading and language arts in junior and senior high school in the Carolinas and is currently Professor of Literacy in the Graduate School of Education at George Mason University. 

 

Dr. Peter Afflerbach is a Professor in the Reading Center, Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Maryland at College Park. His most recent book is Understanding and Using Reading Assessment, K-12 (International Reading Association).  His research interests include literacy assessment, the alignment of reading assessment with standards for reading and the strategies that readers use to understand text. His research has been published in numerous theoretical and practical journals.  He is a past editor of the Reading Assessment column in The Reading Teacher, and he serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of The Reading Teacher, Reading Research Quarterly, and Journal of Educational Psychology. He is a co-editor of the Handbook of Reading Research. Currently, he serves on the Reading Committee of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the Reading Framework 2009 Committee of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and the Reading Committee of the National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS).

I had assumed that this would be a collection of digital flash cards. It is not. It's a mishmash of flashcards as a continuous "book." It is not useful as a study tool, however the information is still good and the table of contents and index are useful, so it gets 2 stars instead of 1.Just buy the real cards.

overall they are very good, but they don't have the basic concepts like inflammation, neoplasia etc. it's just clinical presentation/cases. Also I was a bit disappointed that it didn't include pictures of the structural changes in the tissues

Grade 5-8 -When her father and brother are taken by the Taliban and her mother and baby brother are killed in a bombing raid during the Afghan war in October 2001, Najmah begins an arduous journey across the border to Peshawar, Pakistan. There, she meets up with an American woman, Nusrat, who has been conducting a school for refugee children while she waits for her husband, Faiz, who has returned to his native country to open medical clinics. For most of the story, the narration alternates between Najmah and Nusrat, allowing readers to see the war's effect on both of their lives. Only when they meet can they come to terms with their losses and move on. However, readers may feel unsatisfied with the ending. Having cared for the characters and been involved in their lives, they will want to know what happens to them. The use of an American allows the author to provide a clearer description of this unfamiliar world, but because Nusrat is a grown woman, her concerns may be of less interest to readers than those of Najmah, an enterprising and enormously courageous girl. Still, Staples brings the world of the refugee camp to life. When her mother and baby brother die in an American air raid, she stops speaking, and, disguised as a boy, makes a perilous journey to a refugee camp in Pakistan. In a parallel narrative, Nusrat (her American name was Elaine), who converted to Islam when she met Faiz in New York, has set up a rough school for the refugees. She has had no news of Faiz, her husband, since he left to establish a clinic in the north. The two stories come together when Najmah and Nusrat meet in the camp, where they wait in anguish for news of the people they love. Staples weaves a lot of history and politics into her story (including information about the Taliban's suppression of women), and she includes a map, a glossary, and brief background notes to give even more context. But as with her Newbery Honor Book, Shabanu (1989), it's the personal story, not the history, that compels as it takes readers beyond the modern stereotypes of Muslims as fundamentalist fanatics.
